The opening of Duffy's Tavern began with the sound of a piano playing "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," sometimes with several people singing along. A telephone ringing would cut through the music. Archie would answer the phone: "Duffy's Tavern where the elite meet to eat. Duffy ain't here, Archie the manager speaking" (short pause) "Oh hello Duffy." Duffy, the bar's actual owner was never heard, listeners heard only Archie's side of the conversation.

Archie the manager, played by Ed Gardner, led the antics at the bar & grill on Third Avenue. Regulars included Ms. Duffy, Duffy's man-crazy daughter (first played by Shirley Booth), Eddie the janitor/helper around the bar (played by Eddie Green), and Clifton Finnegan (played by Charlie Cantor), a loveable moron.

The show also seems to have served as the inspiration for several television series set in bars, namely Cheers, and the All in the Family spinoff, Archie Bunker's Place.
