Drag racing
Drag racing is a form of auto racing in which cars or motorcycles attempt to complete a fairly short, straight and level course in the shortest amount of time, starting from a dead stop. Drag racing originated in the United States and is still the most popular there. The most common distance is one quarter of a mile (402 m), although one-eighth of a mile (201 m) tracks are also popular. The dragstrip extends well beyond the finish line to allow cars to slow down and return to the pit area.

At any given time there are over 325 drag strips operating world-wide.

Election Distraction: Cobra Jet Versus LS7 Camaro
If they were looking for press coverage, the folks at SEMA couldn't have picked a worse day to start their annual show. Everyone's reporting on the future of the free world and could care less about muscle cars and tricked out performance mods. We're here to give you a break from the wall-to-wall election coverage and talk about a great American drag racing rivalry from the past century that's been resurrected at SEMA 2008: Chevy vs. Ford. The Cobra Jet Mustang and COPO Camaros were legendary race-ready cars upgraded by just as legendary dealers. Their symphonic exhaust notes should be etched into the brains of any gearhead who remembers the Nixon administration. Ford and Chevy hope the Cobra Jet and LS7 Camaro have a similar effect on car-lovers who lived through two terms of George W. Bush. Details are sketchy -- but both look to be solid contenders for weekend racing. Vote for your fave after the jump... Ford Mustang Cobra Jet The 2008 Cobra Jet is a 40th anniversary tribute to the 1968 Cobra Jet, a collaboration between Ford and dealer/racer Bob Tasca. Ford says the modern recreation will be available for customers to race during the 2009 season of NHRA sportsmen classes. It's got a 400-hp 5.4-liter supercharged engine mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission (you can get an automatic, but why would you?) and upgraded drag racing wheels and tires. Ford says the Cobra Jet is NHRA-legal to 10.00 second ETs and has an NHRA Stock Eliminator legal interior and is approximately 3,300 lbs. ?The Cobra Jet is one of the transformational vehicles for Ford Racing,? Ford Racing Technology director Brian Wolfe said in a statement. ?The 2008 CJ will get us more involved with the sportsmen racers in drag racing. At this point there are a lot of little guys who are running Fords from the 60s, 70s and even a few from the 80s, but those cars aren?t necessarily relevant to what we are producing today. Those Ford racers are among the most loyal Ford supporters and customers we have,? he said. Though all 50 of the $69,900 cars are spoken for, Ford says there will be future Cobra Jets. Adventurous racers can upgrade a stock Mustang, as all Cobra Jet upgrade parts are available for purchase straight from Ford. Chevy Camaro LS7 Of the four concept Camaros appearing at SEMA, this is our favorite. With a 550 hp LS7 crate engine modified with a wet-sump oiling system and paired to a Tremec six-speed manual, this concept is meant to evoke the COPO Camaros of dealers Don Yenko and Fred Gibb. Camaro5.com assures us this is no stripped-down racer -- the interior is all base, but suitable for taking the family on a ridiculously fast vacation on long stretches of deserted roads. Even though we think "Victory Red" is a more suitable name for a paint code on a Moskvitch, the LS7 badges and drag-ready wheels and tires will ensure a crowd of juvenile delinquents will appear wherever you park this thing. Unlike the Ford, the Camaro LS7 is strictly a concept. The enthusiast need merely purchase an LS7 engine and the wet-sump oil system and bolt it into their 2010 Camaro in order to recreate the concept. We have no doubt it'll happen.
