"Doctor Dolittle" also refers to a character, John Dolittle, in a series of novels by Hugh Lofting, written mostly in the 1920s and 1930s. In the novels, John Dolittle is a doctor who studies the speech of animals and learns to talk with them. Presumably this movie was inspired by the novels; however, virtually none of the material of the novels is included in the movie.
