Downstate New York
Downstate New York is a popular term for the south-easternmost portion of New York State, USA, containing predominantly New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island in contrast to Upstate New York. The Downstate region contains the largest population concentration in the state, unlike Upstate, an area which forms the vast majority of the state's land area yet a relatively small population and considerably less national and international connections and familiarity. There is no clear boundary between Upstate & Downstate, with even some residents of Albany not considering themselves Upstate. The two regions differ culturally and socially in terms of demographics, economy, and social patterns.
