Dorothea Tanning
Dorothea Tanning (Aug. 25, 1910) is a painter, printmaker, sculptor and writer. She has also designed sets and costumes for ballet and theatre. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, Tanning lived in Paris for twenty-eight years. She was married to German painter Max Ernst (his second wife, after Peggy Guggenheim). Her first book of memoirs was Birthday, published in 1986 (Lapis Press). Her autobiography Between Lives was published in 2001 (WW Norton). Tanning's most recent published work is a book of poems titled A Table of Content (2004, Graywolf Press).
