Doris Duke
Doris Duke, (November 22, 1912 ? October 28, 1993) was an American heiress and philanthropist.
Marriages
Duke married twice, the first time in 1935 to James Cromwell, with whom she had a daughter, Arden. The child lived for only a day and the couple divorced in 1943. In 1947, while in Paris, France, she became the third wife of Porfirio Rubirosa a diplomat from the Dominican Republic and a notorious playboy. She reportedly paid his second wife, French actress Danielle Darrieux, $1 million to agree to an uncontested and quick divorce. However, this marriage lasted only a short time, and although her lawyers had protected her financial interests with a pre-nuptial agreement, she still gave Rubirosa several million dollars in gifts. While she subsequently had a number of relationships, Ms. Duke never remarried.
