First run in 1766, it is the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world, though not since its early years has it overshadowed the St. Leger Stakes, now considered Doncaster's leading race. Together with the 2-mile (3,219 m) Lady O' Goodwood Cup and 2-1/2-mile (4,023 m) Ascot Gold Cup, the Doncaster Cup is part of Britain's Stayers' Triple Crown for horses capable of running longer distances. Only six horses have ever swept the series, one of them twice.
