Donald Broadbent

Donald Broadbent (Birmingham, 1926-1993) was a British psychologist. He was a well-known researcher in cognitive psychology and was particularly well known in the psychological and educational community for his work on implicit learning. The majority of the experiments for which he had gained fame were conducted along with his colleague Dianne Berry.

Broadbent was also responsible for one of the early theories of selective attention. Broadbent's Filter Model (1958) proposed that the physical characteristics (e.g., pitch, loudness)of an auditorily presented message were used to focus attention to only a single message. Broadbent's Filter model is referred to as an early selection model because irrelevant messages are filtered out before the stimulus information is processed for meaning.
