Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Jane Umbridge is a fictional character in the Harry Potter series of novels by J.K. Rowling.

Personality

Umbridge is very prejudiced against non-humans and part-humans ("half-breeds") and has drafted a series of anti-werewolf legislations making it very difficult for characters such as Remus Lupin to hold jobs. The half-giant Rubeus Hagrid is also targetted by her in her teacher evaluations, while this bigotry ends up being part of the reason for her downfall when she insults a herd of Centaurs.

Her time in Hogwarts is characterized by cruelty and physical punishments against students ? she stands out especially for forcing Harry (and other students) to write lines using a quill that magically caused the words to be cut into the skin on the back of Harry's hand. This cruelty increases to the point of authorizing whippings against Fred and George Weasley, and eventually even being willing to use the Unforgivable Cruciatus Curse in order to force Harry to reveal what he was doing in her office.

She's also seen as ruthless and willing to break the law in order to protect the Ministry or to discredit Harry Potter ? besides the aforementioned example of the Cruciatus Curse, another example is the way she sent Dementors against Harry Potter in order to force him to perform magic outside of school.

As a character, she represents the idea that the world is not split into good people and Death Eaters, being fully as evil as any of Voldemort's followers without being a Death Eater.
