Dole is a commune in the Jura d?partement in France, of which it is a sous-pr?fecture. Population (1999): 24,949.

Dole was the capital of Franche-Comt? until Louis XIV conquered the region; he shifted the parlement from Dole to Besan?on. The university, founded by Philip the Good of Burgundy in 1422, was also transferred to Besan?on at that time.
