Doctor Who Confidential

Doctor Who Confidential is a documentary series created by the British Broadcasting Corporation to complement the revival of the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Each episode is 30 minutes long, and is broadcast on BBC Three at 7.45 PM on Saturdays, immediately after the broadcast of the weekly television episode on BBC One. It is narrated by Simon Pegg and produced and directed by Gillane Seaborne. As with the main series it accompanies, the programme is a BBC Wales production.

Described as focusing on the human element of the series, Confidential features behind-the-scenes footage on the making of Doctor Who through clips and interviews with the cast, production crew and other people, including those who have participated in the television series over the years of its existence. Each episode deals with a different topic, and in some cases will refer to the Doctor Who episode that preceded it. After broadcast, each episode of Confidential will be available for viewing on the Doctor Who Confidential website.

Although the 2005 series of Doctor Who is being released on DVD, there are no plans to release the full versions of Doctor Who Confidential, on its own or as a special feature, on the main programme discs. This is supposedly due in large part to the high cost and legal difficulty of licensing the music and classic series clips used in Confidential for commercial sale (the process is much simpler for broadcast media).

During the summer of 2005, BBC Three accompanied their repeat showings of Doctor Who with fifteen-minute versions of the Doctor Who Confidential episodes, entitled Doctor Who Confidential: Cut Down, and containing only the new series-related footage. These more easily clearable versions — containing no old series clips or pop music tracks — will be released on the Series 1 DVD box set. A special DVD-only episode of the series has also been prepared by the production team for release on the set.
