Throughout its history Dissent has opposed the pro-Stalinist left and, later, the New Left. Its main viewpoint is democratic socialist. The New York Times proclaimed that Dissent Magazine "ranks among the handful of political journals read most regularly by U.S. intellectuals." The current editors of the magazine are Mitchell Cohen and Michael Walzer.
