This was after Shillong, the erstwhile capital became the capital of the state of Meghalaya that was carved out of Assam. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ To the south of Dispur is the mythologically important site of Basistha Ashram and the Sankardeva Kalashetra, a cultural center created in the 1990s.
