Discover America

The indie rock band Discover America is the newest addition to Chris Staples' extensive musical resumé. Former lead singer of Twothirtyeight, a band formerly signed with Tooth & Nail Records, Chris Staples left following their 2003 breakup to pursue new ambitions. Staples independently recorded the acoustic albums Panama, and Burned and Blistered. In 2004 Staples released Blackest Hair, Bluest Eyes which was a compilation of both his earlier releases with two additional songs. Nearing the end of 2004, Chris Staples began experimenting with his new project, Discover America, and was immediately re-signed by Tooth and Nail Records. After relocating from Pensacola, Florida to Seattle, Washington Chris Staples wrote and recorded his first record under the name Discover America. Psychology was released April 26, 2005. Also in 2005, Chris Staples recruited bassist Phillip Blackwell and drummer Daniel Guaqueta. Blackwell and Guaqueta are both members of Questions in Dialect, an experimental rock band from Jackson, Mississippi.

The precise musical style of Discover America is very hard to pin down as the tracks in Psychology are obviously comprised of a variety of music styles. From the lo-fi hip-hop beats in tracks "Call It in the Air" and "Green Eyes," to the insertion of the kazoo and organ in "From the 100th Floor", Psychology has an independent flavor all its own.
