Today's Dinamo continues the tradition of the famous clubs HA?K (Hrvatski Akademski ?portski Klub, meaning Croatian Academic Sports Club), Gra?anski (Citizenship), Dinamo and Croatia. The oldest of those, HA?K, was formed on November 6 1903 as a students club, and Gra?anski was formed on April 26 1911 as a club for all social circles. After WW2 when communists came to power, both famous Zagreb clubs were disbanded overnight, and the municipal club was formed on June 9 1945. Like many other communist clubs in Eastern Europe, it was also called Dinamo, and all the best and prospective Gra?anski players immediately joined the newly formed club.

The Gra?anski manager Martin Bukovi continued to work in Dinamo, together with masseur Franjo ?lof, also a former Gra?anski player. Of the HA?K players that transferred to Dinamo, the regulars in the first team were Ratko Kacijan, ?eljko ?ajkovski, Svetozar Peri?i? and Drago Lojen. Only ?ajkovski stayed in Maksimir for a longer period, all of 11 years. Newly formed Dinamo also took Gra?anski's blue colours and from 1969 on, the club's emblem was very similar to that of Gra?anski.

That continuity and tradition of former Croatian clubs like HA?K whose players laid the foundations to the modern football, Gra?anski that was the most successful and most loved club in Zagreb and Dinamo, the symbol of Croatia during the hard communist years, were united under the name Croatia from 1993 until 2000. However, after 7 years, on February 14 2000, the name Dinamo that never left the Bad Blue Boys' banners officially returned to Maksimir.
