For Argentina, Simeone, nicknamed El Cholo after his father (active footballer during 1960s), amassed 106 caps, the first coming in 1988. He played in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups. It was in the 1998 Cup that he was part of an incident with David Beckham; the English star kicked Simeone and was sent off. Never a big scorer, Simeone has scored 11 goals for his country. He was considered a great leader on the pitch.
