A very quick and incredibly strong centre forward, Drogba immigrated to France at the age of five. He began his professional career at Le Mans. In his early career he played mainly in defence. Drogba joined Guingamp in 2002 and by the 2002-03 season he had converted into an effective striker. He joined Olympique de Marseille for the 2003-04 season, when Marseille coach Alain Perrin paid a French domestic transfer fee record amount for him. Drogba further enhanced his reputation at the club, where he spent only one season, competing in Marseille's UEFA Cup Final against Valencia. His dynamic season at the french giants persuaded Jose Mourinho to buy him for Chelsea signing him for £24,000 000, making him their record signing. Drogba quickly became a favourite with the supporters, helping Chelsea to lift the Carling Cup by scoring in the final against Liverpool. He scored 16 goals in 40 appearances for Chelsea during the 2004/2005 season, lifting the Premier League trophy at the end of an exceptional debut season.
