When Brazelton was only 15 years old, he had both knee surgery in 1995 and Tommy John surgery in 1996. He attended Middle Tennessee State University and set some strikeouts and wins records there. The Devil Rays selected him with the third overall draft pick in the first round of the 2001 MLB amateur draft and Brazleton made his MLB debut September 13, 2002. In 2004, Brazelton received the Tony Conigliaro Award. In 2005 he was the opening day starter for the Devil Rays, but he pitched so poorly in his subsequent outings that the club optioned him down to the AAA Durham Bulls. He was placed on the suspended list after failing to report to Durham, then arove in Durham about two weeks after originally being demoted. He was then demoted to AA, only to be promoted about three weeks later - a decision which caused some mild controversy with the fans and the team alike. Fellow teammate Eduardo Perez was quoted as saying "What message does that send to the rest of the young guys in the organization?".
