Development aid

Development aid (also development assistance, international aid, overseas aid or foreign aid) is aid given by developed countries to support economic development in developing countries. It is distinguished from humanitarian aid as being aimed at alleviating poverty in the long term, rather than alleviating suffering in the short term. Development aid is composed of three separate areas: governmental (ODA), foreign investment (FDI), and private (NGO's and others). A fourth area, remittances (sums sent home by foreign workers) has an uncertain role, and since some studies have concluded it has a negative effect on economic growth many commentators do not consider it aid.
