Des Plaines River

The Des Plaines River rises in southern Wisconsin just west of Kenosha, USA. From its origin, the Des Plaines flows in a southernly direction primarly through marshland as it crosses into Illinois. The river eventually turns to the west and enters the woodlands of the Lake County Forest Preserve. After another turn to the south, the Des Plaines River continues in a due south direction for several miles.

Eventually, the river turns to the southwest and joins with the Sanitary and Ship Canal in Lockport, Illinois before flowing through the city of Joliet, Illinois. The area around Joliet is heavily industrialized and there are dams on the river in this area. Just west of Joliet, the Des Plaines converges with the Kankakee River to form the Illinois River.
