Derek Raymond Joseph Audette was born in Hull, Quebec, but has made his home, throughout most of his life, either in the Ottawa Valley region of eastern Ontario, or in the city of Ottawa proper. He is an accomplished musician, painter, film-maker and poet. Throughout the 1990's he was a familiar face throughout the Canadian Rock, and Blues music community, acting as a front man, and as the creative force behind the bands: Lexington Blues, Swamp Ash, and Wardenclyffe. During the same time he also acted as producer for a number of local Ottawa musicians.

In recent years Audette has become more well known for his painting in abstract styles and for his unique style of poetry. He is perhaps most widely known for releasing much of his work to the public, free of cost and copyright restrictions. With his work, Audette is well known for making wide use of Creative Commons licensing structures and because of this many of his musical compositions have appeared in literally thousands of films and radio, T.V. and Internet broadcasts, and much of his poetry and writing is widely, and freely available on the Internet.

In 2003 Audette gained widespread attention with a conceptual art piece entitled: "The Secret of the Stones" where, without notice or explanation to the public, he created hundreds of small, simple, concrete sculptures which were engraved with a coded, runic-like writing. He then placed these sculptures in various locations throughout the city of Ottawa, to be found by unsuspecting citizens. In some instances, the coded writing, when and if deciphered, directed the finder to hidden or buried treasure. A similar art piece entitled: "Need some art, take some art. Have some art, leave some art." involves Audette leaving his abstract paintings in various, often unusual places around the city of Ottawa to again be found by unsuspecting citizens.
