A depression (also called a 'low') is an area of low pressure caused by rising air.

Water vapour in the rising air cools and condenses to form clouds and precipitation. For this reason depressions normally bring cloudy, wet and windy weather.

In the northern hemisphere this rising air tends to circle in an anticlockwise direction due to the coriolis effect.
