Demo (comics)

Demo is a 12-issue series of comic books by writer Brian Wood and artist Becky Cloonan, published 2003-2004 by AiT/PlanetLar. Each issue is an isolated story, but they all revolve around the lives of young people. Originally, the series was intended to focus on young people with supernatural powers - indeed, many of the issues do just that - but as the year progressed, Wood and Cloonan found themselves creating stories simply about people, relationships, and emotions, and the "supernatural" angle was quietly deemphasized.

Demo was very well-received. The series was not only embraced by the "indie comics" world, but also found some crossover success with mainstream superhero readers thanks to the "super powers" content. Wizard, a steadfastly mainstream comics magazine, named Demo its 2004 "Indie of the Year." The 2005 Eisner Awards nominated Demo twice, for Best Limited Series and Best Single Issue (for #7, "One Shot, Don't Miss").

Initially, Wood and publisher Larry Young emphasized the "single-issue" aspect of Demo, suggesting that the series would probably not be collected into a trade paperback. AiT/PlanetLar, generally seen as a publisher of graphic novels, held up Demo as proof that it had not abandoned the monthly-pamphlet format. As a result, AiT/PlanetLar's announcement in July 2005 that a Demo paperback would be published in December left some fans feeling cheated http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=9a56c3a5666d5cd6b40adb22f48e1967&threadid=37720.
