Deja Vu (video game)

Deja Vu:A Nightmare Come True is a "point-and-click" adventure game set in the world of 1940's hard-boiled detective novels and movies. It was released on the IBM-PC and Macintosh in 1985. A version for the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in 1990.

Completely rewritten versions of Deja Vu and its sequel for Microsoft Windows came out in the

early 1990s.

Deja Vu originated the interface and engine that became ICom's trademark. The engine was re-used in

a later sequel "Deja Vu 2: Lost In Las Vegas", as well as in Shadowgate and Uninvited.

The game takes place in Chicago during December 1941, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

You're Ace Harding, a retired boxer who is working as a private eye. You awake one morning in

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

a bathroom stall, unable to remember who you are. You discover that you've been framed for

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

murder, and you must recover your memories and destroy all the planted evidence before you go

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

to the police.

This game and its sequel are considered by some fans to be the most difficult of ICom's games. The player is forced to think

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

more than is expected in most games. For instance, one puzzle involves dusting a writing pad with the fine tip of a pencil in order to read the impressions of what was written on a previous sheet of paper. Another not-so-obvious problem is that many players, after solving the case, still find themselves inexplicably arrested at the end of the game when attempting to appeal to the police. The problem is the sunglasses found in Ace's pocket at the beginning of the game. They're too big for you, so they're obviously not yours.

What many players don't realize is that they belong to the man you were framed for killing, so they must be destroyed before going to the police.

The NES version was infamous for having a defective save system, probably due to a hardware defect.

Its sequel is one of the more famous pieces of NES vaporware. It was completed but never released. The port finally saw release on the Gameboy Color.
