Debendranath Tagore


 

Debendranath Tagore (Bangla:???????????? ?????, Debendronath ?hakur)(May 15, 1817 - January 19, 1905) was a Bengali philosopher from current-day West Bengal, in India.

He was born in Calcutta, India. His father, Dwarkanath Tagore was a rich and famous Bengali landlord.

Debendranath believed in religious reform and was opposed to societal Hindu practices like sati. He advocated universal education to free Bengal from such baseless beliefs. He was an active Brahmo, and was against sati, idol worship and the concept of multiple gods. He was asked by the leader of Brahmo Samaj Raja Ram Mohan Roy to continue his work in his absence. He came to be known as Maharishi Debendranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore was his son.
