Charles Bronson plays a sullen loner in the Canadian Yukon of the 1930's. He gets on the wrong side of a gang of bullies when he draws his gun on them to prevent them from killing a Husky dog for losing a dogfight. Later, the bullies try to ambush Bronson, and he kills one in self defense. This sets off the main action of the film - a long chase lasting many days, across the frozen Northwest, with the captain of Mounties played by Marvin trying to capture Bronson, and Bronson trying to escape across the border into Alaska.

The film is well conceived and executed; and is also remarkable in that it contains long stretches of action with no dialog whatever, in keeping with Bronson's laconic - some would say, inarticulate - screen persona.
