The school is mostly recognized for its extraordinary football tradition. The team, currently coached by Bob Ladouceur, owned a record 151 game winning streak from 1992 to 2003, more than doubling the previous record of 72. During that span the team won 12 California North Coast Section championships and was named national champion in seven different years (once by ESPN - 1994, five times by USA Today - 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003)and also in 1999 by the National Sports News Service(The NSNS was the oldest nat'l prep football poll in history and still holds the record for most years with a nat'l poll -from 1927-2000). The streak ended on September 4, 2004 against Bellevue High School of Bellevue, Washington.

The school has also received its share of criticism due to the fact that, as a private school, it is able to recruit the top players throughout the East Bay, gaining an unfair advantage over other high school programs. De La Salle does not actively recruit, however, relying only on its name and reputation to recruit players from all over the region.

Though the school is all-boys, it does share classes with the next-door all-girls school, Carondelet High School. In turn, Carondelet's girls can serve as De La Salle's cheerleaders at games.
