Davidson College


 

Davidson College is a highly-selective private liberal arts college for 1,700 students in Davidson, North Carolina. Bobby Vagt is its president. Since the school's establishment by Presbyterians in 1837, the college has graduated 23 Rhodes Scholars and is consistently ranked in the top ten liberal arts colleges in the country by U.S. News and World Report magazine.

The campus is located near Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. Davidson is sometimes referred to as the "Princeton of the South," and Davidsonians return the favor by calling Princeton the "Davidson of the North."

Woodrow Wilson attended Davidson College before moving to Princeton to finish his studies. Dean Rusk, the United States Secretary of State from 1961-1969, also attended school at Davidson. Author Patricia Cornwell is another high profile alum.

In early 2005, the College's Board of Trustees voted in a 31-5 decision to allow 20% of the board to be non-Christian. John Belk, the former mayor of Charlotte and founder of Belk's Department Store, was a casualty of this decision, resigning in protest after more than six decades of affiliation with the college. Stephen Smith also resigned.

The Royal Shakespeare Company was in residency for most of the month of March 2005 at Davidson College, performing The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, as well as numerous educational activities, many of which are open to the general public. In 2006 and 2008, the RSC will not present plays; they will only conduct educational programs. Instead, in 2006, their artists will direct a Shakespeare play with Davidson students as actors, with the possibility that the play be presented in Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of the RSC and the birthplace of William Shakespeare They will next perform plays in Davidson's Duke Family Performance Hall in 2007.

Davidson's sports teams are known as the Wildcats and their colors are red and black. The Wildcats participate in the NCAA's Division I (Division I-AA for football) as a member of the Southern Conference. The basketball team reached the height of its success in the 1960s under Coach Lefty Driesell, and consistently posts winning seasons, including in 2005, when the Wildcats were undefeated in conference play.
