After Ted Kaczynski requested that his manifesto, titled Industrial Society and Its Future, be published in a major newspaper (which would cause Ted to cease the bombings), The New York Times and the Washington Post both published the manifesto, hoping somebody would recognize the writing style of the author.

David recognized Ted's writing style, and notified authorities. On April 3, 1996, police arrested Ted Kaczynski in his quiet rural shack in Lincoln, Montana. David told police his brother's whereabouts in exchange that his identity be kept secret, as not to create future turmoil. However, his name was leaked to various news sources, which caused the Kaczynski family to seek a guarantee that Ted would not be tried for the death penalty. This promise was not fulfilled, but Kaczynski only received a life sentence (without parole) for his actions.
