David Herd (footballer)

David Herd (born April 15, 1934 in Hamilton) is a Scottish former football player, the son of Scottish international and Manchester City player Alex Herd.

Herd started his career at Stockport County, for whom he played up front alongside his father, though Herd junior's appearances were limited by his national service duties. Nevertheless, he did well enough to attract the attention of Arsenal, who signed him for £10,000 in 1954. Herd made his Arsenal debut the following year against Leicester City, and soon became a regular goalscorer for the club. In 1960-61, Herd hit 29 goals, the most by an Arsenal player since Ronnie Rooke, but Arsenal's poor form meant they were nowhere near winning a trophy. Herd moved to Manchester United in the summer of 1961. In all he scored 107 goals for Arsenal, making him the club's 15th highest goalscorer.

His first game for United would come against West Ham United on August 19, 1961. Herd would help the club to the 1963 FA Cup and the 1965 and 1967 league championships. He left the club in 1967 with 144 career goals, good for 9th on the all-time club list. He also won five caps for Scotland.
