The film is about a character named Boy (River Phoenix). Boy was a widower, and lived as a hermit on a nuclear testing site, waiting for the end of the world while making dolls that he believed had magical powers. Boy ends up helping a couple (Jonathan Pryce and Judy Davis) when their car breaks down whilst driving through the desert. Dark Blood was written by Jim Barton and directed by George Sluizer.

Dark Blood was never completed, due to the untimely death of River Phoenix. This is unfortunate, because this was the first movie in River's career that he felt really strongly about, due to its environmental message, and eagerly awaited its release. The crew was 11 days shy of completion. After Phoenix's death, his mother was sued because of loss of expenses, as the film had to be abandonded.

As of late, what was finished of the film is owned entirely by George Sluizer, the director. Apparently, he has hinted he'll use it as footage in a documentary about River's life.

Because of hard rainfall later on, the areas where they were filming in were very hard to travel through since the ground virtually turned to mud, so it was an enormous risk to film in some areas. In a sad irony, River commented on the situation, saying, "Somebody's going to die on this film." Unfortuantely, that somebody was him.
