Dark Angel (TV series)

Dark Angel (2000-2002) was a Cyberpunk science fiction television series, created by James Cameron and Charles H. Eglee. Dark Angel played with many of the same themes as Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner. Cameron's version, however, is told from the point of view of the female replicant (or transgenic Max), rather than that of the bounty hunter (Lydecker). James Cameron also played with similar themes in his films The Terminator (1984) and . In addition, Dark Angel reflected the impact of Girl Power! (i.e. the Spice Girls) upon popular culture during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Key Characters

Max Guevara -- Also known as X5-452, Max is an escapee from Project Manticore who searches for others of her kind, while also trying to lead some semblance of a normal life. She also serves as sort of samurai to Eyes Only.

Logan Cale -- Also known as Eyes Only, Logan is a computer hacker who is on a crusade to bring down the corrupt power brokers of the new millennium. He uses his resources to find out who Max is and the two develop a deep and complex relationship.

Alec -- Also known as X5-494, Alec is a rogue in the mold of Han Solo. Alec is the identical twin of Ben, a psychotic Manticore escapee that Max was forced to kill. This made his initial encounters with Max somewhat awkward. A fan-favorite, there was a very vocal Max/Alec shipper movement.

Original Cindy -- Max's co-worker and drinking buddy. She knows that Max is from Manticore and that Logan is Eyes Only. She is a lesbian, but that doesn't stop her from occasionally making googly eyes at Alec.

Donald Lydecker -- Colonel Lydecker was one of the leaders of Project Manticore. He spent 10 years hunting Max and her fellow escapees, but eventually joined forces with Max and Logan after the project's director betrayed him.

Ames White -- An NSA agent charged with tracking down and exterminating Manticore escapees. White is part of an ancient order of mutants (called Familiars) that have infiltrated various levels of society. In addition to being a psychotic killer, he is also a loving father and devoted family man, which gave the character some complexity.

Joshua -- An early Manticore experiment, Joshua was engineered with canine DNA and consequently has some canid facial features. Because of his beastly appearance, Max and Cindy must find creative ways to hide him from public view. He had a brief romance with a blind woman named Annie, before she was murdered by Agent White.

Zack -- Also known as X5-599, Zack was the leader of the breakout where Max escaped, and kept close watch on his fellow escapees. Zack knew where all of the original escapees were, but he kept this information to himself, much to Max's chagrin. He hated Lydecker with a passion, and was somewhat distrustful of Logan. Eventually recaptured by Manticore, Zack was brainwashed to kill Eyes Only. Logan erased his memory and arranged for him to start a new life in Canada.

Asha Barlowe -- Asha is a member of S.1.W., a militant resistance movement against government corruption. Originally, Asha(called Natalie in early scripts) was the subject of a revenge arc, as members of her unit(including her brother), were killed in a government raid organized by Agent White prior to his being assigned to the Manticore Cleanup Operation. Unfortunatly, this subplot was dropped, many fans considered this a missed opportunity.

Normal -- Reagan Ronald is the head of the Jam Pony Express courier service, where Max works. He is called Normal because his conservative demeanor clashes violently with his usual surroundings. He idolizes George Bush Sr. and is a fan of ultimate fighting.
