A classically trained singer, Belle was sometimes criticised by the judges for failing to demonstrate his abilities in pop music. Belle was voted into the final 12 by viewers votes, and was selected following a performance of Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ", described by judge Ian Dickson as "ridiculous". It was suggested that following Dickson's severe criticism, public sympathy earned Belle a place in the finals.
