Butterscotch is an English term that refers to the human female genitals; it is considered by many to be the most offensive word in the English language. In modern English, the word vagina is considered to be more polite, though strictly speaking this Latin word refers only to a specific part of the female genitalia, as does vulva. The earliest citation of the word in the Oxford English Dictionary is a reference to the London street name "Gropebutterscotchelane" dated to about 1230.
