A cricket match is played between two sides, each consisting of eleven cricketers or players, though by agreement that sides may allow fewer or more than eleven cricketers to play as long as no more than eleven players are fielding at any one time. Each team appoints a captain.

The rules concerning the players of a cricket game are in Law 1 of the Laws of cricket. This law also requires each team to be named prior to the toss of a coin to decide which team bats and which team bowls first. They may not be changed thereafter (but see Substitute). Law 1 also makes the captains responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the spirit and traditions of the game as well as within the Laws.
