Crate motors
A crate motor is a motor that is purchased from a motor building firm. Racing teams are not allowed to make adjustments to the motor - they must install it "as is". Crate motors get their name because they are shipped in a crate. Some racing sanctioning bodies require motors to keep the cost even for all teams. It also keeps the technology the same for all teams
