CMT Canada

CMT Canada operates as a joint venture of Corus Entertainment and MTV Networks, and is entirely separate from the American version aside from the name. It continues to use the familiar three-box logo that the US version used for nearly 14 years. CMT Canada airs music videos, country-themed movies, and original shows. CMT Canada also airs Nashville Star, which airs on USA Network in the United States.

CMT Canada launched on December 31, 1994 as the New Country Network (NCN). In many areas it replaced the American CMT service, as a result of a CRTC policy which effectively bars American services which are directly competitive with Canadian specialty services (a policy that has since been treated with more flexibility). In retaliation, CMT launched a complaint under NAFTA and threatened to cease carriage of videos from Canadian artists. The matter was settled when NCN's ownership was restructured, giving CMT a minority ownership interest. The relaunched CMT Canada service debuted October 31, 1996.
