Countdown is a British game show formerly presented by Richard Whiteley (1982-2005), and currently Des Lynam (2005-), with the assistance of Carol Vorderman, and shown daily on Channel 4. It was the very first programme aired by that station when it was launched on November 2 1982, and is one of the longest running game shows in the world, with over 3,800 episodes. Production was suspended following the death of Whiteley on June 26, 2005, but on 20 September, Des Lynam was named the new host upon the show's return. It is reported that Lynam's contract is for a minimum of 40 weeks (200 programmes).
