Conrad Grebel


 

Conrad Grebel (ca.1498-1526), son of a prominent Swiss merchant and councilman, was a co-founder of the Anabaptist¹ movement and is often called the "Father of Anabaptists".

  • 1.Those who rejected infant baptism in favor of adult baptism upon confession of faith were dubbed Anabaptists ("rebaptizers") by their enemies, but the movement started by Grebel, Manz, Blaurock and others is more properly known as Swiss Brethren.
  • 2. In 1519, Vadian married Conrad Grebel's sister Martha.
  • 3. The first disputation occurred in January of 1523 between Zwingli and Johann Faber.
  • 4. January 21, 1525 is generally regarded as the foundation date of Anabaptism.
  • 5. Though no copies are known to remain, quotes taken from Grebel's pamphlet are found in Zwingli's reply (Elenchus) published in 1527.
