The first tournament was held in Saudi Arabia in 1992, and was known as the King Fahd Cup, named after King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. In 1997, FIFA upgraded the status of the competition, increased the number of teams to eight, and renamed it the FIFA Confederations Cup. In 2001, it was hosted by South Korea and Japan as a warmup for the {{Wc|2002}}, and this precedent continued in June 2005, when {{Wc|2006}} host Germany hosted the 2005 edition.
