Concelho


 
 

A concelho is the primary local administrative unit in Portugal (and other Lusophone countries). It is also called munic?pio (municipality). A concelho contains one or more freguesias.

The elected bodies of a concelho are the C?mara Municipal and the Assembleia Municipal.

According to figures from the Instituto Nacional de Estat?stica, there are 308 concelhos in Portugal.

A concelho does not usually correspond to a city (Portuguese: cidade) or town (Portuguese: vila). In fact, the total number of official designated cities and towns in Portugal is approximately twice the number of concelhos.
