A Communist state is a term for a state governed by a single political party which declares its allegiance to the principles of Marxism-Leninism. Although the stated aim of a Communist system is the abolition of the state into a classless society, Marxist-Leninists consider these states a necessary, albeit unpopular, transitional phase.

The term "Communist state" originated from the fact that most of such states are or were run by Communist parties. However most of these states called themselves socialist (such as in the name Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), since in Marxist political theory, socialism is the intermediate stage in reaching communism.
