Columbia High School (Maplewood, New Jersey)
History
Located in the heart of suburban Essex County, Columbia High School is one of the oldest schools in New Jersey. It was founded as the "Columbia School" in the very early 1800s, becoming a high school in 1885. The current building was built in 1926 on the site of the Crowell cider mill. Large additions dating from the 30's (industrial arts), 50's (athletics and class rooms) and 70's (library, science rooms, industrial arts, more...) Columbia High School was featured in the 1930 Encyclopedia Britannica for "superior school design."

The sport of Ultimate Frisbee was invented by a group of Columbia students in 1968. Created as a gag game between The Columbian (the student run school newspaper) and the Student Council, the first game of Ultimate was played in the school parking lot. Columbia also played the first interscholastic game of Ultimate against Millburn High School on November 7th, 1970.

In 1993, Columbia High School was declared a Blue Ribbon School for Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
