College of William and Mary
The College of William and Mary in Virginia is a public, liberal-arts university located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Founded in 1693 and named in honor of King William III and Queen Mary II, it is the second-oldest university in the United States (Harvard, founded in 1638, is the oldest). At the request of the House of Burgesses and the Reverend Dr. James Blair, the commissary (or representative) of the Church of England in Virginia, it was founded in the Virginia Colony in 1693 by royal charter issued by the monarchs of England.
Tribe Pride
Recently, William & Mary was confronted with the NCAAs list of "Offensive nicknames" which listed "The Tribe" among them. Due to the new leadership of President Nichol, the College was given an extension to submit an evaluation (which was recently prepared and submitted on the nickname of "The Tribe"). Ramifications of the likeliness of having to change their nickname would include a redesign of the logo, which currently has two feathers, one green and one gold, and the adoption of a new nickname. Recently, the College's "unofficial" mascot, Colonel Ebirt, an amorphous green blob with a tri-cornered hat, was axed and became the subject of student controversy. The Flat Hat, William & Mary's student newspaper, ran a story on the mascot, and the Athletic Department alleged that it bore no relationship to the possibility of the abandonment of the nickname "The Tribe" and that Colonel Ebirt was actually never officially a mascot. However, the general student body doesn't believe this and as of now, William & Mary has no official mascot. One suggested mascot for William & Mary is "King William."
