Known for its diverse student body, tolerant values and the eclectic interests of its students, the College of Santa Fe serves as a solace for artistic talents who don't always fit into mainstream society. Also, by sharing space with the Institute of Indian Arts for many years, it allowed for informal bridges between American Indian artists and those at the College of Santa Fe. A very rare college, it fostered a respect for the multiple cultures of Santa Fe, and encouraged the idealism of another era among its students. Many students from College of Santa Fe graduated and went on to become the artistic voices of our time.

Three beloved professors stand out as leaders at the college. One was Brother Clifton, who presented a liberal view of Catholic theology, reminiscent of Joseph Campbell. A second was Dr. Harrell, who taught multicultural psychology and exposed students to writers like Albert Memmi and Paulo Freire to help students understand issues of oppression and colonization. A third was Robert Sorrell, a Navajo artist who would work with students on projects over break and wasn't above teaching painters how to stretch their own canvas.
