Earth is suffering from overpopulation and the near depletion of all natural resources. Humanity lives under oppressive globalization, packed in crowded, but environmentally-safe cities surrounded by harsh desert wasteland. Access into these cities, as well as travel between them, is highly restricted. No one is permitted to leave or enter a city without the proper "travel covers" which are referred to as "papelles" in the current lingo (which mixes English with tidbits of Spanish, French, Arabic and Mandarin). Most residents of the cities only come out at night and remain indoors during the day. Direct sunlight has become hazardous to their health.
