Car Buyers Predict Presidential Race
Just when you thought there couldn't possibly be another way of predicting what might happen less than nine days from today, last week Kelley Blue Book (KBB) Marketing Research announced a poll of car-owning likely voters. If rising sales of smaller cars are any clue, the results don't bode well for the McCain campaign. Not surprisingly, the poll shows that owners of larger trucks and traditional luxury cars are more likely to vote for McCain, while owners of hybrids and station wagons are more likely to vote for Obama. "Car ownership says a lot about a person, and can even be an indicator who they are likely to vote for," KBB Senior Vice President Rick Wainschel said. "If consumers are concerned about the environment, they may choose a more eco-friendly vehicle, like a hybrid, and vote for the candidate with a favorable stance on energy. Consumers? values impact their purchasing decisions and reflect their preferences in political leaders." The top three brands among Obama supporters are Mini, Subaru and Saab, and we suggest that Obama play up the first two. The Cooper S and WRX symbolize youth, energy and responsiveness -- and both cars are financially responsible choices. Republicans fearing tax increases in a Democratically controlled government might point to the bills racked up by any Saab owner trying to finance repairs of the car's many complex and quirky systems as an example of government waste. Plus, that torque steer always seems to pull to the left. McCain backers favor GMC, Chevrolet and Buick. Again, two out of three ain't bad. GMC symbolizes true American grit and a blue collar sensibility, while Chevrolet is an American icon. Both fit McCain's image as a war hero with years of experience. Buick, on the other hand, conjures up images of Sanka, early bird specials and accidentally driving through the front window of Rite Aid. We suggest the McCain campaign downplay the fact their candidate fits squarely into Buick's prime demographic. Other trends include import owners backing Obama (how un-American!) and full-size luxury SUV owners backing McCain (how Bush-era!) Hybrid owners give Obama the edge 48 percent to McCain's 39 percent (and 13 percent still holding out for Dennis Kucinich). "McCain?s appeal among owners of domestics and large trucks/SUVs is right in line with where we see a majority of those vehicles selling -- in the traditionally Republican 'red' states," said Wainschel. "With import and hybrid owners typically favoring Obama, this also aligns with strong sales of these types of vehicles in predominately Democratic 'blue' states." While the KBB survey didn't include any information on third-party candidates, we're pretty sure that drivers who built their cars from kits will be voting for Libertarian candidate Bob Barr, while Corvair owners with a sense of irony will be backing Ralph Nader.
