Clogging
Clogging is a traditional type of percussive folk dance which is common in the Appalachian Region of the United States, associated with the predecessor to bluegrass - "old time" music which is based on Irish and Scots-Irish fiddle tunes. The dance is not performed using traditional wooden clogs - but leather-soled shoes with metal taps. The rhythms are derived from Irish, Scottish, Canadian, and English step-dancing, Cherokee Indian dancing and African dance and drum rhythms. Nowadays people use a great variety of music, as long as it's in four-four time and is pretty fast, it works. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Some forms of traditional African clogging have been absorbed into more modern clog-dancing; the jooba is one such move. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Competitive clogging has several organizing or governing bodies including the National Clogging and Hoedown Council (NCHC), America's Clogging Hall of Fame (ACHF), and the Clogging Champions of America (CCA). Each body hosts competitions, certifies judges, and promotes clogging in their own unique way. CCA is a fairly new organization that many young dancers are drawn to due to its modern approach to music, costumes, etc., while still also embracing traditional forms of the dance. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Competitions are held throughout the year, but many take place during the spring, summer, and fall at large venues. Workshops are also held throughout the year where cloggers gather to share steps, learn routines, and have a good time. Typically a competition will be held on the last day or evening of the workshop. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
