Clifton Pugh


 

Clifton Pugh (1924-1990), Australian artist, won the Archibald Prize three times. He won an Order of Australia medal in 1985. Known for landscapes and portraiture.

He was married three times; to June Byford, Marlene Harvey and Judith Ley.

One of his best known paintings was The death of a wombat (1972) which was to do with the radio feature of Ivan Smiths.

He served with the AIF in New Guinea and Japan between 1943 and 1947.

He bought a property 30 miles outside Melbourne called Dunmoochin, near the town of Hurstbridge in 1951, where other artists joined him and founded the Dunmoochin Artists Society in 1953.
