Clayhanger


 

Clayhanger is a novel by Arnold Bennett, first published in 1910. It is a coming-of-age story of Edwin Clayhanger, as he leaves school, takes over the family business, and falls in love. It was extremely popular when published and has been in print often throughout the 20th century.

Clayhanger was written as the first part of the Clayhanger Trilogy. The second book was Hilda Lessways, which paralleled Edwin Clayhanger's story from the point of view of his eventual wife; and These Twain, which chronicled the married life of Edwin and Hilda. A fourth book, The Roll-Call, concerns the young life of Clayhanger's son, George Cannon.
